Artist Spotlights: Madison Baker has Nothing to Hide
Austin-based pop singer Madison Baker has already made her presence known with the release of two masterfully crafted singles.
Artist Spotlights introduces you to artists that may not be on your radar yet, but should be. With recently cancelled tours and income loss for small artists, there’s no time like the present to find new talent to support.

Despite having just two tracks out at the moment, singer Madison Baker is already making a name for herself within the Austin music scene. Her debut single, “Champagne Shine,” has racked up more than 60,000 streams on Spotify and was described as having “glitzy synth savvy” by The Austin Chronicle. She was also featured in the virtual SXSW lineup curated by Women That Rock, a Brooklyn-based discovery platform that elevates up-and-coming female artists.
Even at the beginning of her music career, Baker is capturing the attention of those around her — and for good reason. Living up to the Chronicle’s description, the production on “Champagne Shine” is minimal yet commanding, with light electronic pulses that allow Baker’s rich voice to flow through. The soundscape of the single becomes even more impressive, considering the track was independently produced by Baker and her friends.
The song is an endorsement of self-love and self-assurance, with Baker singing, “Why do I feel so afraid of daylight? / Got nothing to hide / Ooh, I got that champagne shine.” Even while using her music to navigate the hard work of accepting herself as she is, Baker doesn’t take herself too seriously, as she displays with the lyric “catch me in your city looking flawless” in the track’s chorus. Combined with the song’s bouncy production, these lyrics make “Champagne Shine” the ideal soundtrack for an impromptu dance party for one or a rendezvous with friends (via Zoom, of course!)
“Evidence,” Baker’s second single, sees her lament a love she just can’t let go of. Though the track is more upbeat than her first single, the lyrics are much more dark and biting. “Your sh-t’s in my closet / Still got your own drawer / In and out of this revolving door,” she croons to her on-again-off-again lover. The contrast between the track’s sonic and lyrical tones establishes Baker as a songwriter to watch.
Any new release from Baker with similar infectious melodies and relatable yet piercing lyrics would be the perfect addition to any quaran-tunes playlist. With a project slated to come out later this year, her presence in the Austin music scene is only just beginning. She’s certainly built a strong foundation to let her (champagne) shine.
