It’s no secret that some celebrity friendships can be superficial, but there are a few long standing besties who have paid homage to their true connection with one another by collaborating on a song.
In January, rap princesses Saweetie and Doja Cat released their single, “Best Friend,” which dominated TikTok feeds, held the 12th spot on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop chart, and had people looking at their best friend while singing “Is that my bestie in a Tessie?” for no reason. This tune of female empowerment and celebration recalled many other songs made by other best friends in music.
Here are four other songs that reflect on the true power of friendship:
A$AP Rocky and A$AP Ferg
Growing up together in Harlem, A$AP Rocky and A$AP Ferg built a dynamic friendship that has translated into a powerful hip-hop empire alongside their A$AP Mob rap group. From their freestyles to their interviews together, it’s obvious that they’ve formed a brotherhood. Their 2019 high-tempo single, “Pups,” hypes up the satisfaction of building successful careers with loyal friends and thriving with them by your side. With dog barks, a ‘90s-style hip-hop beat, and a diss on Balenciaga’s sneaker designs, this song ecompasses a complex energy that reflects the duo’s powerful brotherhood. Among their other song collaborations, such as A$AP Ferg’s “Shabba” or the A$AP Mob’s collective’s “Wrong,” “Pups” aims to create best friend banter that gets created on a park’s basketball court or during squad meet ups while riding bikes down the neighborhood.
Ariana Grande and Victoria Monét
Ariana Grande and Victoria Monét have been best friends and frequent song collaborators since Grande’s Nickelodeon days. The pink pop pair released “Monopoly” in 2019 to celebrate the success of Grande’s 8-week streak on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart with her hit song “7 Rings.” Separately, Monét and Grande both have stellar vocals, but together, they create musical magic filled with effortless harmonies. “Monopoly,” co-produced by their friends Social House, describes the gratitude someone feels when getting to work with their best friend and the special bond that comes with the collaboration. In their own accounts of the song’s meaning, Monét said the song is “nothing but good vibes and celebrations of life and friendship,” while Grande echoed that it was “to friendship, freedom, protecting your energy, and staying right in your bag.” The positive intentions are also emulated in the “Monopoly” music video, where Grande and Monét film themselves with camcorders and dance on a rooftop together, showing their bubbly personalities and pure bond.
Chloe and Halle
Oftentimes, siblings can be built-in best friends, which is why sisters Chloe and Halle’s sultry “Do It” deserves a spot on this list. The pair’s close bond translates into their music, their performances, and in their popular Instagram livestreams dubbed “Ungodly Tea Time.” Together, they have risen to the top, and “Do It” is an anthem filled with flirtatious ad libs and mysterious melodies that express the importance of simultaneously having fun with your friends while unapologetically being yourself. In the music video, their correlating outfits, from blazers to jeweled jumpsuits, and perfectly synced dance moves radiate their powerful sister telepathy, while empowering their independence. Whether a sister is defined by blood or a deep connection, this song’s message is universally applicable.
City Girls
Yung Miami and JT, the princesses of the label Quality Control, have known each other since they were teenagers growing up in Miami. They rose to success following a feature on Drake’s “In My Feelings” and have created top charting hits such as “Act Up” and “Twerk,” featuring Cardi B. Despite this success, the pair has experienced a “major setback,” as Yung Miami accounted in their Youtube series that documented JT’s release from federal prison following her 24-month sentence for theft, which took a toll on the both of them. Yung Miami took the lead on the duo’s career to ensure that they would maintain their momentum until JT’s eventual release. This loyalty toward one another is tangible on their song “That’s My B----,” which was included on their 2020 album City on Lock. The song is about showing off your best friend, and the lyrics (“I know my b---- gon' pay my bail”) display their efforts to always praise and protect each other. The jouncing beat creates a fierce mood made for red carpet struts.
Whether you’re jamming in the car or having a wine night, putting on a song that relates to the bond between you and your best friend elevates the energy and scintillates the meaning behind having a bestie that you consider your ‘ride or die.’
